For Preservation Architects & Historic Restoration Projects

Your Buildings Deserve Lighting That Belongs

When you need fixtures for a landmark restoration, the lighting can't be an afterthought. It has to belong.

Old California has spent decades—now in our second generation—handcrafting custom lighting and metalwork for projects including the Gamble House and Los Angeles' Union Station.

If you need a historically grounded fixture, reproduced from a period original, designed from the building's own character or engineered around a constraint nobody else has been able to solve, that's exactly where we work.

We Follow Your Lead

Whether your project requires strict adherence to the Secretary of the Interior's standards or more interpretive historically-inspired design, we work to what your project demands. We're fluent in period details across the major American architectural styles from the Gold Rush to the Space Race. Bring us your specs, your reference photos, napkin sketches, or your instincts. We'll meet you there.

How We Work Together

What do you need to get started? Whatever you have. A napkin sketch, historic photographs, auction house photos or a fully detailed architectural rendering. If you're designing from scratch, photos of the building and the details that speak to you are enough.

What does the design process look like? It typically takes one to four weeks, sometimes longer, depending on complexity. We'll send back drawings, and can supply finish and glass samples as needed for you to sign off for production.

Where are the fixtures made? Everything is made in-house at our factory in Orange, California. We're a full sheet metal fabrication shop, with in-house machining and custom finishing capabilities. Because we manufacture everything ourselves, we have the engineering depth to solve the problems that come up in historic buildings: unusual mounting conditions, non-standard dimensions, constraints nobody anticipated.

Do you restore originals? Generally, no. In very rare circumstances we'll tackle it, but in 99.99% of cases we recommend you find a dedicated specialist for restoration.

How long does production take? Six to twenty-four weeks depending on complexity and volume. In rare cases it may take longer. We can keep you updated with production photos as your project moves through the shop.

Do you install? We don't. But we'll consult with your contractor and electrician before they do, so nobody encounters surprises on the day.

Can we visit the factory? Please do! You're welcome to come see work in progress or take a tour to get your creative juices flowing when you see our capabilities.
