Restoring Prairie School Precision
The Union Township Series
When a 1915 Carnegie library needed authentic lighting, their trustees turned to Old California—and now that precision Prairie School design can grace your home, too.

Behind the Design
The Union Township Public Library in Ripley, Ohio faced a challenge many historic homeowners know well: finding lighting that honors architectural integrity without compromise. Their 1915 Carnegie building deserved better than the uninspired fixtures from a 1990s update. After extensive research, the library board discovered Old California and commissioned us to create period-appropriate Prairie School lighting.
We studied the original architectural details and translated them into durable brass fixtures that capture the building's spirit. The result was so successful that we've made this design available to homeowners like you who share the library's commitment to authentic period character.

Union Township Design Features

Proportioned Presence
These fixtures make a statement. Designed for substance, the Union Township series brings commanding presence to your home's exterior while maintaining elegant proportions.

Prairie School Distinctions
The series features a distinctive brass overlay drawing on the Prairie School's love of geometric forms.
Plus, the broad, sheltering roofs echo the horizons of the Midwestern landscape where the land connects to the sky.

Versatile Configurations
From column mounts to wall sconces, pier lights to perch mounts, the series offers complete flexibility. You can carry the same authentic design language throughout your property, creating visual cohesion that feels intentional and complete.
A Note from the Library
For years, the Carnegie library in Ripley, Ohio had wanted to change the exterior lighting fixtures--the last ‘upgrade’ was in the early 1990s with white 16” globes on a stick. We looked at many off the shelf styles as well as some fine artisan crafted lights, but nothing seemed to be at the scale or the design that would work.
One of our board members found the website for Old California, and we got excited—the column lights really looked elegant and possible. We reached out to Old California and we were thrilled with the communication...[they] custom designed the fixtures, picking up a pattern from the original leaded glass... (how cool is that!)
Now the Union Township design is available to everyone. Working with the Old California team was delightful and inspiring. Now the lighting that we never had before looks ‘original’ and beautiful, befitting our charming 1915 library. Column lights, wall lights and pole lights all beautifully grace our building and our town.
