How Far Should My Light
Hang from the Ceiling?

Finding the right height to hang light fixtures is a common dilemma during your remodel or redecoration

Whether you're installing a new chandelier, a pendant light over a kitchen island, or ensuring safe clearance in walkable areas, getting the height right is crucial for both function and aesthetics.

Your space should be beautifully—and comfortably—illuminated. Here’s the simple steps to figure out your best height for light fixtures.

Materials Needed

- Tape measure

- Pen and notebook

- Ladder or step stool (optional but helpful)

Calculate Overall Height for Walkable Areas

The key to determining the right hanging height in walkable areas, such as hallways or open spaces, is to ensure ample clearance for you to walk under the fixtures comfortably.

Step 1, Measure Your Ceiling Height: Start by measuring the height of your ceiling (or the surface where you'll mount the fixture) all the way to the floor.

Step 2, Subtract for Clearance: We recommend hanging your light so that the bottom of the fixture is at least 84 inches from the floor. This provides sufficient clearance while contributing to the room's ambiance.

Step 3, Do the Math: Subtract at least 84 inches from your ceiling height to find the 'overall height,' which includes both the fixture and any chain or stem it’s mounted on. For example, with a standard ceiling of eight feet, or 96 inches, you would end up calculating an overall height of 12 inches. Remember that the overall height includes the fixture itself and the chain or stem.

Determine Height Above Tables or Counters

When hanging fixtures above a table or counter, the approach changes to accommodate your ability to function within the space.

Step 1, Measure from Floor to Ceiling: Begin by measuring the height from the floor to the ceiling/mounting surface.

Step 2, Measure Working Surface: Measure the height of your table or counter (or other surface the fixture will be hanging over).

Step 3, Allow for Optimal Clearance: We recommend the bottom of your fixture hang at least 36 inches above the surface of your table or counter. Subtract the height of your table or counter from your ceiling height, then subtract at least 36 more inches. This ensures that the light hangs at a functional height that enhances the area without interfering with sight lines or usability.

Double-Check Your Calculations

To ensure accuracy before installation:

- Use a Balloon on a String: Hang a balloon from the ceiling at the calculated height to visualize the bottom of your light fixture. This can help you adjust the height visually before making permanent adjustments. Remember to include the height of the balloon as part of the fixture in your test.

- Create a Mockup: If you’re still unsure, consider watching our tutorial on determining the proper size for your light fixture and creating a mockup to hang temporarily. This allows you to live with the fixture size in place for a while to ensure the height feels right.

By following these steps, you can confidently determine the ideal hanging height for your light fixtures, enhancing both the style and functionality of your home. Remember, the goal is to balance aesthetic appeal with practical considerations, ensuring your spaces are both welcoming and well-lit.
